17th and 18th August 2023
Take Courage Gallery, Amersham Arms pub, New Cross, London.

The pub can be considered a ritualistic and intimate space within culture. The show considers the pub from poetic and sculptural perspectives; a space that performs as Heterotopia [a term coined by Michel Foucault in 1967], a world within a world. It mirrors the domestic to provide a public lounge as a place to congregate, meet in social fluidity, to fall in love, a place to retreat after work, and a place that provides a shelter for the lonely. The pub poses as both a temporary freedom but also dependency in a transaction, we fall into financial fragility. The phrase to Borrow Tomorrow’s Happiness alludes to the pursuit of happiness through drinking and its consequential hangover. Happiness is presented to us as something to obtain or a promise that will come. This situates happiness as a future thought or endeavour, a desiring well.
